Right On, Suh!

This feller has sum excillint insights:

~~~[In the modern era] The moral force has not grown together with the development of science. Indeed, it has rather diminished, because the mentality of technology confines morality in the subjective sphere, while we have need in fact of a public morality — a morality which knows how to respond to the threats which weigh down the existence of us all. The true, most grave danger of the present moment is found precisely in this disequilibrium between technological possibilities and moral energy...
The political moralism of the 70's, whose roots have not yet died, was a moralism which succeeded to fascinate even those youth filled with idealism. But it was a moralism with the wrong address, inasmuch as it was deprived of serene reasoning and because, in the last analysis, it put a utopian political order above the dignity of the individual man, showing itself capable of arriving, in the name of its grand objectives, to devalue man. Political moralism, as we have seen and as we still experience, does not only fail to open the path to regeneration, but blocks it. The same is true, consequently, of a christianity and of a theology which reduces the core of the message of Jesus, the "Kingdom of God", to "values of the Kingdom", identifying these values with the great terms of the order of political moralism, and proclaiming them, at the same time, as the synthesis of religions; thus forgetting, however, God, notwithstanding that He Himself is the proper subject and the cause of the Kingdom of God. In His place, there remains great words (and values) which are capable of any type of misuse...
[E]ven the refusal of a reference to God is not an expression of tolerance which wants to protect non-theistic religious and the dignity of atheists and agnostics, but rather is an expression of a conscience which would want to see God definitively cancelled out of the public life of man and chained in the subjective ambit of the residues of past cultures. The relativism, which constitutes this point of departure, has become such a dogmatism that it believes itself in possession of the definitive understanding of reason, and that it has the right to consider all other viewpoints as a stage in this history of man which has been superseded and which can be thus reinterpreted. In reality, we have a radical need to survive and not to lose the vision of God, if we want human dignity not to disappear. (Excerpts from
Absolute Tolerance Is Suicidal
Michael Novak's ideez iz wurth repeatin:
If everything is relative [no absolutes], even tolerance is only a subjective choice, not an objective mandatory value...
[T]he fact of human “relativity” — that is, the fact that we each see things differently, or that the life-voyage of each of us is unique and inimitable — should not be transformed into an absolute moral principle...
The fact of relativity does not logically lead to the principle of moral relativism...
The culture of relativism invites its own destruction, both by its own internal incoherence and by its defenselessness against cultures of faith...[Jiss look't whut Izlam'z doin in the Wess]
Innermishn Frum the Parody Marython
Alain Woodrow had sum innerestin pts. ta make bowt the Islamik broohaha ovr the cartoonz:
"[T]he current crisis..., reveals the total mutual incomprehension between Western and Muslim mentalities. On the one hand, democracy’s sacrosanct principle of freedom of opinion is summed up by Voltaire’s dictum: “I don’t agree with what you say but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.” On the other, the theocratic tenet holds that everyone, whether a believer or not, must abide by the diktats [sic] of a given faith. The Church used to teach that “error has no rights” – a dangerous justification of witch-hunting and the Inquisition....
And what of humour, which was the starting point, after all, of the cartoon controversy? Laughter and religion are uneasy bedfellows at the best of times, but many spiritual thinkers would say it has a vital role to play in serving to deflate the ego, and is the best antidote to intolerance, puritanism and pomposity. Humour serves to deflate the ego. It cuts a person down to size. Humour is the first step to humility. "
